About this assignment

I need house-sitters who are septic system savvy (not using chemicals or chemical laden products, please use mine), organically-minded and willing to not cook meat (or only cook it outside on the barbeque). (Cooking meat coats everything in the kitchen with grease.) I also have no microwave.

What responsibilities are required of the house sitter

Feed one dog (Lila) and 2 cats (Winnie and Tony.
Scoop cat box once a day.
Give attention to Lila (walk. pet, sit with on couch..) and give pets to cats.
Let Lila outside occasionally to relieve herself or put her in the yard. She will prefer to be around you as she is a people person, but she does not need to be spoiled.
Water flowers & inside plants 1-2 times a week
Give me an email update every couple of days.

What are the good features of the property and location

I have a house and 2 acres that is 2 miles north of Silver City, NM, a town of 10,000 with a nice selection of arts and culture. I am about 1/4 mile from the beautiful, 3+ million acre Gila National Forest and the Continental Divide Trail.
The house has great views and porches, and has wifi but no television.

What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment

I expect my place will attract mostly vegetarians and nature-oriented people who might want to put up with the lack of wave-emitting appliances and not cooking meat. Sorry if these wishes offend, but you probably would be happier elsewhere anyway.

Testimonials

Toby and I enjoyed sitting for Lila, Tony and Winnie. These pets are perfectly trained and on a schedule. They would patiently wait for us to feed them at exactly the same times each day. They are very affectionate as well. Each morning we were greeted by them waiting for their morning rubs! At night, they would not go to bed until we went to bed. This was our first sitting experience and I was amazed at how quickly they “warmed up” to us and how easy it was to take care of and love them. They each have their own unique personalities but co-exist together perfectly. Joanie was very accommodating to us. She opened her house to us as if it were our own. There were a few rules, as we expected there would be, but nothing that was not clearly stated before we accepted the position. She gave us tips on Silver City and we thoroughly enjoyed our visits there and also visits to surrounding cities. We spent our first night there with Joanie and were totally at ease. Joanie’s house is very cozy and more than accommodating. Even though not very close, the neighbors would stop and introduce themselves and invite us to go visit. The surrounding landscape is amazing with beautiful Mountain Views and plentiful wildlife. Daily walks with Lila was a treat for us. We would sit for Joanie again. If we are ever in the area, we will try to visit for sure- Lila, Tony and Winnie are in our hearts now and we will never forget them.

Homey Gila Forest Housesit

My partner and I really enjoyed housesitting for Joanie. We loved our time with goofy Lila the basset hound, fierce but friendly Honey Boy and the matriarch of the crew, Magic, the 19 year-old cat. Joanie kindly hoasted us for two nights before she left, which gave the animals time to warm up to us and let us get used to the routine. She also introduced us to a few friends and neighbors, making us feel right at home and it was nice to know we had backup if needed. Joanie has put a lot of love into her "dream house" and it shows! We loved the hand-painted touches and the many happy and healthy houseplants. The location was perfect for us. Taking Lila out for runs and walks in the Gila was the highlight of our time and so convenient given that it's practically in Joanie's backyard. Secluded as Joanie's place feels, it was easy to get into Silver City and conveniently, we were in town for the international bike race through the Gila. We also liked the local co-op and farmers market and I managed to squeeze in a weaving class with Joanie's neighbor, Hosana, which was awesome! All-in-all, we had a lovely, peacful month and would be happy to housesit again anytime we're in the area.
