About this assignment

Tidy, non-smoking, mature person(s) to keep an eye on our 3 bedroom, 2 bath home on 5 acres, and enjoy Central TX from mid August through September 2024 (exact departure and return dates TBA). Excellent communication skills required during in-person interactions. Good judgement in dealing with household issues that may arise, tho' these are rare and unexpected, by knowing when to contact us and/or appropriate service providers (e.g., aerobic septic, well, etc.).

What responsibilities are required of the house sitter

Water potted plants weekly/bi-weekly.
Contact appropriate trades people if needed to address unexpected issues (e.g., aerobic septic, water well, etc.).
Monitor outdoor areas watered by timers to check for leaks.
You will need a vehicle as public transportation is limited and grocery stores are 2-5 miles away.
Keep house clean and return it to us as clean as you found it (list of expected cleaning tasks will be provided)
Non smokers only, please.

What are the good features of the property and location

We love our peaceful, 5-acre property! A short 10-minute drive north takes you to San Marcos, home of Texas State University and over 1,000 acres of natural areas, hiking/biking trails, and the clean, beautiful waters of the San Marcos River. Enjoy a float on the San Marcos River or the Comal River in New Braunfels, where you'll find our premier water park, Schlitterbahn. Golf around the corner at Kissing Tree Golf Club. Shop at two huge outlet malls less than 5 miles away (Premium and Tanger). Dine at top-notch restaurants in San Marcos and beyond. Or drive 30-40 minutes north to enjoy Austin's vibrant scene or 45 minutes south to San Antonio's river walk and historical sights.

What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment

You will need a vehicle as public transportation is limited and grocery stores, hospital, etc. are 2-3 miles away. We have wifi and watch our 55-inch TV via streaming services; we do not have cable television (i.e., no sports or news channels).

Can I bring my own pets?

Testimonials

Wonderful housesitting experience!

If you ever have the opportunity to housesit for Ann and Craig, count yourself lucky! They are a wonderful couple who own a beautiful, charming, well-appointed home in a gorgeous Central Texas country setting, but close to a huge array of attractions from nature and outdoor activities to great dining, brewery and winery options to historical and cultural sites. The Jensens left detailed written instructions that included links to a collection of homemade videos that, as a visual learner, I found especially helpful. Their property is very pretty and many days I didn't even venture out as I enjoyed being there so much. The icing on the cake is Benny, the sweetest dog you'll ever meet. Benny is an older gent who is extremely well behaved and seemed to be very happy to putter around the property with you or sleep away the afternoon. He adapted very well to my presence. The Jensens are interesting, kind, generous, and lots of fun. I spent an afternoon and evening with them to get oriented before they left for their trip, and after only a few hours together they felt like old friends.

Dog Sitting in San Marcos for Ann and Craig

Anne and Craig were wonderful hosts! They were warm, welcoming, and beyond prepared. We arrived at a clean, tidy home the day before their departure. They had made sure to set time aside to orient us, go over the agreement (which they had sent us weeks before) and share a delicious home cooked meal, while being extremely attentive to COVID etiquette (e.g. we shared our meal al fresco, at two separate tables spaced a couple of meters apart). In addition to very thorough instructions that covered Benny's needs, watering schedules, emergency contacts, general house and grounds maintenance, preferred vendors, as well as a list of things to do in San Marcos. They even created how-to videos for things that required a bit more explanation (pool maintenance, water system, etc.). We never once felt ill informed or unprepared for any situation that arose on their five acre property. They even let us borrow their car after the one we had arranged fell through at the last minute. The house (and property) itself was fantastic—a really well-kept house where we immediately felt at home, whether cooking in their decked-out kitchen, which we did every day, or exploring the surrounding forests and meadows. Their dog, Benny, was well trained, stoic, and a pleasure to care for. Once we warmed up to one another, he became a wonderful companion for our stay and, a month later, we still miss him. Last but not least, Ann and Craig are fun, interesting, kind people and are a pleasure to work with. We look forward to the day when we have a home half as wonderful as theirs, and it’s certainly an aspiration now. We would absolutely come back.
